6, 2006
Mary Leah Gant, 84, died peacefully at her home in
Sun Lakes, Arizona, on Monday, March 6th, 2006, after a short illness.
Her family was with her.
She was born in New
Orleans on May 9, 1921. Her parents were Albert Raymond DeCuir
and Viola Love Hollins DeCuir.
Mary married Hulbert
(Bert) L. Gant on May 28, 1949. They recently celebrated 56 years
of wedded life.
After graduating from
Cal State (now the University of California at Long Beach), Mary was
employed by the University of Chicago and worked as a chemist on the
Manhattan Project. She later joined the Social Security Administration,
retiring after twenty-four years of service.
Mary was a member of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), where she was
active in the Relief Society and community affairs.
She was also deeply involved
in her church's genealogy program, tracing several of her ancestors
back to the 1400s. As an outgrowth of her passion for genealogy,
she was instrumental in founding a local organization, the Black Family
Genealogy & History Society.
In her later years, Mary
became a member of the AARP and Narfet Area Agency on Aging.
Surviving family includes Mary's
husband Bert, son Michael and his wife Monica, 7 grandchildren and
5 great-grandchildren. Another son, John Winston Gant, and 2 grandchildren
predeceased her. Also surviving are Mary's brother, Robert H. Decuir,
and sister, Louise Joan DeCuir.
Funeral services took place
at the LDS Pleasant First Ward, 800 W. Chandler Heights Rd., Chandler,
AZ, on Saturday, March 11, 2006. The Carr Tenney Mortuary in
Tempe, AZ, was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in East Resthaven
Cemetery, Phoenix.
